With the influenza A (H1N1) flu outbreak in the news, travelers want to know what to do if they contract H1N1 virus (swine flu) while on a trip or if there is coverage for canceling or changing a planned trip due to this flu outbreak.
General Coverage Guidelines
Generally, there is coverage available under the Medical Expense/Emergency Assistance, Trip Interruption and Travel Delay benefits for persons who become ill while traveling. Persons are also covered under the Trip Cancellation benefit when canceling a trip due to illness (provided the illness, in the written opinion of a physician, prevents travel). Not every plan includes all of these benefits. You can review your plan information at tripmate.com or call Trip Mate for complete details.
If this H1N1 flu outbreak is officially declared to be an epidemic or pandemic by the CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) or the WHO (World Health Organization), then from that point forward there are no benefits, either for persons while traveling or for those who cancel their trips, as there is a specific exclusion for epidemics or pandemics. If this outbreak is not declared to be an epidemic or pandemic, then the following guidelines apply:
Trip Cancellation
Generally, there is no coverage if you cancel your trip based upon the possibility of becoming ill, with the exception of plans that include a Cancel For Any Reason Benefit. To see if your plan includes a Cancel For Any Reason Benefit and the terms and conditions of your specific plan, you can either review your plan details at tripmate.com under the Plan Information tab (you must enter your Plan Number and state of residence), or call our Customer Service staff at any time.
Medical Expense/Emergency Assistance
If you contract H1N1 flu while traveling, you are covered up to your plan limits for medical expenses incurred as the result of your illness, subject to the plan provisions and exclusions. Our assistance provider (One Call Worldwide Travel Services Network) is available 24/7 to help you with obtaining medical care, arranging for medical evacuation, if required, and to answer any related questions you might have.
One Call is there to help you obtain the best possible medical care in emergency situations. If you are currently in Mexico or elsewhere and experiencing flu-like symptoms, please call the One Call Emergency Assistance Hotline at 1-800-555-9095 (within the USA and Canada) or collect at 1-603-894-4710 (all other countries).
For further information about the H1N1 flu, its treatment and the current status of infection, we recommend you monitor the Centers for Disease Control Prevention (CDC) website at www.cdc.gov/swineflu and/or the World Health Organization website at http://www.who.int/csr/disease/swineflu/en.
Trip Interruption
If you become ill while you are on your trip and must interrupt your trip, benefits are available up to the amount provided by the plan and subject to the policy provisions and exclusions to reimburse your unused land or water travel arrangements and additional transportation expenses as outlined in the policy provisions. You can review your plan information at tripmate.com or call Trip Mate.
Travel Delay
If your plan includes Travel Delay Benefits, additional meal and accommodation expenses may be reimbursed, subject to the policy provisions and exclusions, up to the amount provided by the plan if you become ill on the trip and cannot continue or return home as scheduled.

The volcanic eruption in Iceland has grounded over 60,000 flights since April 15, 2010 throughout Europe, stranding hundreds of thousands of travelers worldwide and impacting many thousands more scheduled to begin travel during this time.
Never before has a natural disaster such as this caused this type of disruption in Europe. The large volume of calls that we have received has increased our telephone hold times. We thank you for your patience and understanding as we try to process inquiries and requests.
To facilitate helping those stranded or scheduled to travel in the immediate future, we recommend using our website which contains many online self service tools, such as plan information, checking status of previously reported claims and online claim reporting.
The most common questions we are receiving concern how our plans cover the volcanic eruption. Generally, new plans purchased since November 1, 2009 have been underwritten by United States Fire Insurance Company.
If such a plan was purchased April 14, 2010 or prior and your travel is affected by the volcanic eruption in Iceland, the following provides a brief summary of the coverage provided. All benefits are subject to the maximum limits listed in the Schedule of Benefits for your plan. Please refer to the certificate of coverage for full details regarding the plan’s benefits, limitations, and exclusions which can be viewed at www.tripmate.com under the plan information tab by entering your plan number. Generally, one or more of the following benefits may provide coverage for your situation:
-
Trip Cancellation/Trip Interruption – The plan provides a benefit in the event a trip is canceled or you must interrupt your trip because your common carrier ceases operations for at least 12 consecutive hours due to inclement weather, or your trip destination is made uninhabitable due to a natural disaster.
Benefits for Trip Cancellation may include reimbursement of the non-refundable trip costs insured under the policy. Trip Interruption benefits may include reimbursement of the unused portion of the land or water arrangements plus additional transportation expenses incurred either to join, catch up to, or return from the trip.
-
Missed Connection – The plan provides a benefit in the event your arrival on your trip is delayed 3 hours or more due to a delay of your common carrier or due to a natural disaster.
Benefits may include reimbursement of the unused portion of your land or water arrangements and additional transportation costs to join your trip.
-
Travel Delay – The plan provides reimbursement for reasonable accommodations, meal, and local transportation if during your trip your travel is delayed for 12 hours or more due to a delay of your common carrier or due to natural disaster.
-
Medical and Medical Evacuation – If you are traveling in Iceland and have been injured, please contact the assistance company, One Call, for assistance by calling collect to 1-603-894-4710. The plan provides reimbursement on an excess basis for medical expenses incurred due to injury. It also provides evacuation to the nearest adequate medical facility for treatment and medically appropriate transportation home. For travelers in Iceland with an effective date on or after April 14, 2010, medical and medical evacuation benefits may still be available if your sickness or injury occurred after the date your coverage became effective.
